Apple Coring

It's the time of the year to start handing out all those fresh juicy apples that are picked at the local orchards.  My daughter loves apples and the usual way I served them to her is sliced thin on a mandolin as "apple chips" (which is a fun tip on its own).  As she got a little older she began to request a whole apple and one of the first times she ate a whole apple she almost did just that, seeds and all.  Well lets just say after that experience I pushed the "apple chips" a little harder. One day awhile back I was at a friends house and she gave her son a whole apple where she cored the apple first, therefore he could actually eat the whole apple.  Well this solved my problem.

The next time my daughter asked for a whole apple the apple corer came to mind until I realized I don't own an apple corer.  So this is when I proceeded to almost remove a finger by trying to core an apple with a regular knife (not recommended).  It was time to get a little crafty.......a melon baller came to mind.  Yes everyone a melon baller can be used not just for melons.

I start at one end of the apple and quickly core the apple, seeds and all, in just a few scoops.  I have since tried using an apple corer and I personally prefer the melon baller method.  Not to mention in the summer months when melons are in season its right there on hand!  I hope this tip make life a little easier!
